Behaviour Management

Rationale
The intention of the Behaviour Management Program at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Primary School is to motivate children to develop positive attitudes and acceptable behavioural patterns, to enable them to become self-disciplined persons who are an asset to society.

Our whole school approach to behaviour management encourages children to be confident, courteous, friendly, reliable, forgiving and compassionate in order to allow themselves and each other the maximum opportunity to learn. Students are encouraged to examine their own behaviour and, importantly, to take responsibility for it.

Behaviour management within our school is underpinned by our Christian ethos, and stems from our care and concern for each child's well being. Our belief in this approach to behaviour management and student welfare, grows out of a context of respect for the mutual rights and responsibilities of each individual.

To effectively implement this Behaviour Management Program, all members of staff aim to operate as a team, sharing responsibilities and supporting one another.

Children Learn Best When;

* They feel confident and secure in their school and home environment;

* The focus of learning is made clear;
* Learning tasks and experiences give opportunity for success;
* The class program caters for mixed abilities;
* Learning includes co-operative group tasks as well as individual learning tasks.

Positive and Caring Relationships

At The Good Shepherd Lutheran Primary School we endeavour to create positive and caring relationships with all children, and encourage each child to form positive and caring relationships with each other by:

* Developing an atmosphere of enjoyment of learning, and a pleasant working environment;
* Listening to children;
* Encouraging children to be fair and sensitive, and to be aware of the rights of others;
* Developing a rapport with children so they feel confident to communicate their needs and concerns;
* Developing in each child a sense of responsibility for his/her own behaviour.

Aims

The Good Shepherd Lutheran Primary School Behaviour Management Policy;

* Provides a framework for teachers to refer to when dealing with behavioural difficulties.
* Encourages the children to become responsible decision-makers, developing a sense of responsibility for their own behaviour.
* Helps children to become worthwhile members of the School, and wider community.
* Endeavours to create positive and caring relationships with all children and encourages each child to form positive and caring relationships with each other.
* Encourages the development of a positive supportive school environment in which teachers assist each other in the management of student behaviour.

Objectives

* That all students will accept the responsibility of their actions, and hence learn to develop self-discipline.
* That each student will accept and respect the authority of each teacher, and accept that each teacher has the right to implement the School's policies.
* That each student will accept and respect the equal rights of every other student and members of the total School community.
* That each student will respect the property of the School, of all other students, and of all members of staff.
* That each student will accept the right of every other student to attend the School in safety and security.
* That each student will accept all other students as they are, and will endeavour at all times to help fellow students to develop as valued members of the School community.

Considering options when choosing. Considering consequences of behaviour, actions, words. Empowering children to solve problems either by themselves or with help.

COURTESY: Appropriate ways of responding, behaving & interacting.
Helping children identify and choose appropriate behaviours.

COMMUNICATION: Responding, speaking, listening, use of verbal & non-verbal strategies. Respecting rights and views of others.

CARE: For self, for others and for the environment.
