Service Learning is an important aspect of learning at Good Shepherd. Service Learning is more than simply supporting a particular fundraising appeal with a donation. Service is faith active in love. Service involves the selfless giving and loving of others, making a difference in their lives by responding to their needs and acting without expecting recognition or reward. At Good Shepherd we challenge our students to grow in their understanding that service is not only a personal response to God’s love, but a broader response as part of humanity for the sake of justice for all. At Good Shepherd, we learn about serving and we learn through serving.
Service Learning at Good Shepherd links in closely with our Christian Studies Program. Our Lord Jesus Christ was the ultimate servant, laying down his life for all people. The life and ministry of Christ is a wonderful example of what it means to be servant-like.
One Service Learning Program that has been supported by Good Shepherd for more than twenty years is our Christmas Gift Giving Program. Tomorrow morning at our Chapel Service, we have the opportunity to support and care for people within our community. The Mayor of Maroondah City Council, Cr Tony Dib and two representatives from Maroondah Community Assist, will formally receive and thank us for our gifts. Thank you for your generous giving and for continuing to support this very special program.
Mrs Sue Tuffin and her class (5ST) are also enthusiastically supporting a Service Learning project of their own. After discussing the work of Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) they have set a goal for themselves to raise funds to purchase two student desks for a school in Cambodia. To raise the $96.00 they need, they are holding a special Stall in the Multipurpose Room at lunchtime tomorrow. All students and staff are welcome to purchase something or make a donation, so don’t forget to bring along some money on Friday (tomorrow).
